The front page of a newspaper typically contains the most important news stories. In addition to big local news, the top of the front page often teases other interesting stories that are inside. For example, the picture of a city gymnast may be on the front page to show that there are also interesting stories about this city.
The term front-page is also used to refer to the first page of a publication, such as a book or magazine. This can be contrasted with the back pages, which are usually less important.
In the United States, the front page of a newspaper is often called the “front sheet”. This is distinct from the editorial and advertising sections of a paper, which are typically called the op-ed or opinion pages. The front sheet can be printed with a variety of different content, from the latest sports scores to celebrity gossip.
For example, the first page of a magazine or newspaper can be devoted to comics, while the rest is dedicated to serious articles and news. Likewise, a website may have a home page and other sub-pages.
In 2014, three Jane Does who were sex trafficked as minors sued the website Backpage, accusing it of facilitating sex trafficking. The plaintiffs were able to show that their traffickers posted ads for them on the site. Backpage argued that these were traditional publisher functions regarding third-party content and thus protected by CDA Section 230, but the court disagreed. The plaintiffs then amended their complaint and were allowed to proceed with their case against Backpage.
